Telefónica and Brocade set benchmarks for the deployment and performance of NFV in joint lab tests

Amsterdam, August 19, 2014 -Telefónica (NYSE: TEF) and Brocade (Nasdaq: BRCD) have jointly defined benchmarks for the deployment and performance of Network Functions Virtualization solutions (NFV). The consistent results of the tests carried out clearly show that NFV offers new performance options for service providers. Brocade and Telefónica jointly established the NFV benchmarks within the Telefónica NFV Reference Lab framework.

"The promise of NFV is fast service creation and very high, elastic scalability. Although virtualization is of great importance for creating flexibility, it is historically also the most important barrier to delivering performance required for scalability, "said Enrique Algaba, Director of Network Innovation and Virtualization at Telefónica.

In the tests, the Brocade ® Vyatta ® 5600 vRouter80 Gb / s achieved on a standard Intel ® x86 server. The router was used within a Red Hat KVM environment as a single Virtual Machine (VM) and supported all available server ports at line rate.

"We installed the Brocade Vyatta 5600 vRouter from a memory stick and performed the performance tests within two hours in our NFV Reference Lab. These results enable us, as network operators, to radically change the perspective of what is possible with software-driven. This with a view to accelerating the acceptance and deployment of these revolutionary technologies, "says Francisco-Javier Ramón, head of the Telefónica NFV Reference Lab.

The Brocade Vyatta 5600 vRouter not only benefits from Brocade vPlane ™ technology, but also from the Intel ® Xeon ® servers and the Intel ® Data Plane Development Kit, enabling performance to be achieved by large international telecommunication companies and service providers. .

"Intel is strongly focused on applying Moore's law to networking and providing a broad SDN / NFV ecosystem based on open source and standard solutions, " said John Healy, General Manager of the Software-Defined Networking division. from Intel. "The Brocade Vyatta 5600 vRouter is an excellent example of performance leadership and innovation based on an Intel architecture and the Intel Data Plane Development Kit. We are excited to work with leaders like Brocade to further expand the performance of virtual networking, and to provide the NFV market with attractive solutions. "

The Brocade Vyatta 5600, released in early 2014, is the first solution specially built for NFV that meets the requirements of major service providers. The router offers advanced routing, firewall and VPN functionality and is a core component of the Network Services Layer of the Brocade Vyatta Platform.

"The Brocade Vyatta 5600 vRouter removes the performance threshold for NFV acceptance. Our focus is now on expanding opportunities for optimal use in service provider networks, "said Kelly Herrell, Vice President and General Manager Software Networking at Brocade. "We continue to invest heavily in modern software to offer high-quality technology for a wide range of networking opportunities."

To underline its commitment to NFV and to encourage the roll-out in carrier networks, Brocade is further expanding the possibilities of the Brocade Vyatta 5600 vRouter with an update. New possibilities are:

  • Layer 3 MPLS;
  • Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol version 3 (L2TPv3);
  • high-availability extensions for IPv6 support;
  • Open Daylight integration by NETCONF / YANG.

"With these capabilities, the Brocade Vyatta5600 vRouter is able to become the first choice for carrier networks, " says Herrell. "With these improvements, service providers can provide existing and new customers with NFV faster and more efficiently."

The update for the Brocade Vyatta 5600 vRouter is expected to be available by the end of 2015. A separate license is required for MPLS functionality. Other unicast options are available as a standard software update. For more information about Brocade's SDN and NFV products:
